Auditions

at Bollescroft, off the Spotlight Car Park,
Hoddesdon EN11 8BE

The list of the dialogue and music pieces set for the auditions is attached.

Copies of the combined libretto and vocal book will be available during the run of Robin Hood and at the first rehearsal on Friday 26th January. A refundable deposit of £25 is required.

Extracts from the libretto and the vocal book for audition purposes only are available to download by clicking on the character name below.

Candidates for principal roles are strongly urged to read the full script to thoroughly familiarise themselves with the nature of the character, what is expected of them and how they interact with other characters; simply reading the brief character descriptions and the audition text is not sufficient. Thorough preparation of the audition dialogue and music is essential to demonstrate your understanding of the character. There are few things as sad as watching someone auditioning who clearly has no idea what the character is all about or what the script requires them to do.

Everyone wishing to be in the cast, either as a principal or in the ensemble, is required to enter the Company Audition consisting of a specified short extract from a song from the show and a movement routine. Anyone wishing to be a dancer must also learn a separate dance routine. These will be set and rehearsed at the 3 rehearsals leading up to the auditions, starting at the first rehearsal on 26th January.

The auditions will follow BTC’s normal procedure with candidates auditioning behind closed doors in front of a panel consisting of the Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, an Outsider and a member elected by the cast, chaired by a member of the Executive Committee. Candidates for the Ensemble will audition in groups of 5.

Director: Ian Stretch
More commonly to be seen in the SM’s corner (he has stage managed over 50 BTC shows), Ian has directed 7 pantomimes and 4 musicals. Ian was very surprised and excited to be invited to direct 9 to 5.

Musical Director: Mike Payne
Members who were in the cast of Anything Goes will know Mike as a rehearsal pianist. However, he has had a very long and distinguished career as MD for many societies. You may be surprised to hear that we are welcoming him back to BTC as he was MD for our productions of Barnum in 1995 and Carousel in 1996 (coincidentally the first musical that Ian directed so they are used to working together).

Choreographer: Natalie Smyth
We are also pleased to welcome Natalie back after her own first ‘production’ last August. Natalie joined BTC for Cinderella in 2010 and choreographed Aladdin in 2016 and Dick Whittington in 2017. She is a Performing Arts teacher at Harlow College and brings her own experience and style to the team for 9 to 5.
